EU Protection of children and young people fleeing the war against Ukraine (debate)
Date:
05.04.2022 07:58
| Language: LV
Mr President, honourable Commissioners, The best way to protect Ukrainian children and young people would be to adopt very severe sanctions at this week's European Council on energy resources and not to feed the Russian machine, the war machine. And it is clear that we will hope for this result, but a lot of young people, of course, have reached the countries of the European Union – some more, some less. And these challenges are already being mentioned about criminal threats or health issues, which both the Commissioner and colleagues have spoken about. I would like to say about integration. This is a very sensitive issue about the integration of Ukrainian young people and children in the countries they have reached. Why? Because it is extremely important to maintain education, the cultural space of young people in the Ukrainian environment. And it's not easy. And this would be largely decisive. There are also countries in the European Union, including my own, Latvia, where there are still public schools for teaching the Russian language. Which means that if Ukrainians were sent to these schools, then I think it would be a very bad result, because the narrative that comes from these schools - not only from official programmes, but also, of course, from youth-to-youth communication - is extremely dangerous for this generation of Ukrainian young people to reach these countries and these schools. It is therefore of the utmost importance for them to maintain their national language education systems and, of course, to maintain their identity, in which it is important to support the mayors of cities, who can support the best opportunities to create such education through these funds, including European and not just national budgets. Among them, Ukrainian language teaching documents are available in the Internet environment from publishing houses such as: Ranok, which are usable in all Ukrainian youth training institutions, keeping them in education, as most of these young people will, in my opinion, return to Ukraine after the war with good experience from the time and education systems of the European Union. Thank you.
