Mental health at work (debate)
Date:
18.10.2023 18:23
| Language: FR
Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, depression, anxiety, burn-out and fatigue at work are multiplying as a result of successive crises, but also as a result of the digitalisation of the world of work. Our colleague Dragoș Pîslaru did well to recall these figures, which are truly frightening. Mental health disorders are often presented as a cost to the company, which is preferred to be ignored. However, by ensuring well-being at work, we increase the productivity of our workers and reduce absenteeism, which benefits both our employees, our businesses and society in general. While no one criticises the benefits of digitalisation, it is still crucial to frame its practices. During this parliamentary term, the Socialists and Democrats called for legislation on the right to disconnect – as France, Belgium or Luxembourg have done – and regulations to regulate digital tools for professional use, as well as better prevention against psychosocial risks at work. Let me recall that a study, commissioned by our Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and published in May 2023, concluded that the efforts of the European Union and our Member States are largely insufficient to tackle psychosocial risks at work. Europe must therefore act to ensure a right to disconnect. Otherwise, future generations will pay the price for hyperconnection, and my political group will not accept that!
